"I was very young when Agostinho Neto unfortunately died and, therefore, he left us prematurely (...) and I did not have the opportunity to see him and get to know him personally", said the Portuguese President, in a video released by Novo Jornal.

In his message, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he was familiar with the works of the first President of Angola.

"I have seen his works, I have read his works, I consider that they are by someone who made a fundamental contribution to Portuguese-language culture and who had a universal dimension in this sense", said the Portuguese Head of State.

"More than that, I know that he maintained a relationship with the Portuguese authorities during a very sensitive period", he added.

The Portuguese PR, in the video released by Novo Jornal, also highlighted that Neto "together with companions and comrades and other nationalities who came to play a fundamental role in the liberation movements in Angola, but then unfortunately as a ruler he had a very short period of governance for health reasons".

"It is clear that I know his work and that it will not die", concluded Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
