Union of Motorcycle Taxi Drivers cancels participation in demonstration against circulation restrictions

The Union of Motorcycle Taxi Drivers of Angola (UMA) announced that it has canceled its participation in the demonstration against the restrictions on the circulation of motorcycles on the main roads in Luanda, called for Saturday, after a meeting with the administrative authorities.

Speaking to Lusa, the president of UMA, Augusto Mateus, who announced the march on Monday, said that the association decided to cancel its participation after Wednesday's meeting with the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL).

"We understand to cancel our participation in this demonstration called for Saturday, all because we brought some proposals and some of these were accepted by the GPL", said the leader of UMA.

According to the official, over the next 90 days UMA will hold talks with GPL and, at the same time, suggest ways to get out of the measures imposed by the authorities on motorcyclists.

"As long as this period of awareness and negotiation with the GPL continues, then, we understand that we will not continue the march. But be aware that the march will continue because it was not just UMA Angola that had called for the demonstration", he highlighted.

The need for continuous training of motorcycle taxi drivers is among the proposals presented by UMA to the GPL and which were "readily" accepted by the capital's administration, he highlighted.

The GPL approved restrictions on the circulation of motorcycle taxi drivers on the main roads in Luanda, aiming to regulate traffic and reduce road accident rates involving motorcyclists, a situation that has generated several protests within the class.

A group of activists and other members of civil society called for a demonstration against the GPL measures, in which UMA initially confirmed its presence, announcing its absence from the protests.

"There are other civil society groups that are in front (of the demonstration) and that will certainly continue", argued Augusto Mateus.

The march is scheduled to gather at 10 am on Saturday, in the Santa Ana Cemetery square, and should continue to the GPL headquarters, in the center of the capital.
