IURD in Angola reaches agreement mediated by the State, recognizes a single leader and changes its name

The conflict between the Brazilian and Angolan wings of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) came to an end through an agreement mediated by the State and which recognizes Alberto Segundo as leader of the organization in the country.

:

According to a statement from IURD, which makes known the "conciliatory decision promoted by the Angolan State", Bishop Alberto Segunda is recognized as the only leader of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola.

The IURD in Angola had been in conflict for several years, with a two-headed leadership divided between the reformist, so-called "Angolan" wing, headed by Valente Bizerra Luís, and the "Brazilian" wing of the sect founded by Edir Macedo, currently led by the also Angolan Alberto Segunda, who replaced Brazilian Honorilton Gonçalves in office, sentenced him to a three-year suspended sentence.

The IURD statement points out that, taking into account "the conciliatory effort of the Angolan State and the need to heal some wounds arising from the riots that took place during the conflict", the organization will now be recognized as the Church of the Kingdom of God in Angola ( IRDA).

"The Church in Angola will continue to adopt, in total respect for the law and the conciliatory effort of the Angolan State, the religious doctrine that is at the genesis of its creation in Angola", adds the same note, according to which "all brothers will be well received, with respect and dignity, as believers and members".

The now called IRDA also calls on its members "to cultivate a spirit of unity" and relationship that "will speak with one voice" through its leader Bishop Alberto Segunda.

In November 2019, IURD dissidents in Angola accused the Brazilian leadership of financial crimes, racism, discrimination and abuse of authority, among others, and formed a reformist wing, which was recognized by the Angolan Government as the legitimate representative of the Brazilian religious movement.

Subsequently, four members of the IURD leadership were accused, who were acquitted in March 2022, of most of the charges, except for the former person in charge Honorilton Gonçalves, sentenced to three years in prison, with a suspended sentence, for the crime of physical violence and psychological.
