João Lourenço promises better salaries for the military “in the first days” of the mandate

The President of the Republic promised this Thursday to promote the improvement of salaries and barracks conditions for the military “in the very first days” of his Government, since the defense of sovereignty and public order “is sacred” for Angola.

"The continuous training of the personnel, as well as the improvement of the conditions for quartering the troops and their salaries, is something that we will dedicate ourselves to in the first days of the entry into operation of the executive", said João Lourenço in the inauguration speech, in Luanda. .

Before a crowd gathered to attend his inauguration ceremony, the head of state defended that the defense of territorial integrity, sovereignty and internal public order "is sacred for a country like Angola, which has lived through decades of armed conflict, has achieved peace and stability for twenty years and intends to preserve them at all costs".

"We will find the best financing solutions for the re-equipment and modernization of the Angolan Armed Forces, to bring them to the level of prestige gained over time", said João Lourenço.

Re-elected with 51.17 percent of the votes, in an election judicially contested by the opposition, but in the meantime validated by the Constitutional Court, João Lourenço took office this Thursday as President of Angola for a second five-year term.

During the ceremony, the new vice-president, Esperança Costa, was also sworn in, becoming the first woman in the country to hold that position.

The Constitutional Court (TC) proclaimed the MPLA and its candidate, João Lourenço, as winners with 51.17 percent of the votes, followed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) with 43.95 percent, having failed. the electoral dispute appeal of the main opposition party.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA, which contests the results and resorted to the lead of the TC and filed, on Tuesday, an appeal of unconstitutionality, elected 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.
In view of the electoral results, the MPLA must also appoint two vice-presidents and two secretaries of the National Assembly and, in the same proportion, the UNITA party.

The Social Renewal Party (PRS), the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and the debuting Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) each elected two deputies.

The Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), the National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and P-Njango did not obtain seats in the National Assembly, which in the 2022-2027 legislature will have 220 deputies.
