International tender launched for the management of the Benguela Railway

The Government launched this Wednesday the international public tender for the management and maintenance of the Benguela Railroad, called Lobito Corridor, for a period of 30 years, announced the responsible for the transport sector.

The Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu said that the objective is to create a company with private capital, a Special Purpose Company (SPE), to be controlled by private operators or by a single entity and with the majority participation of the State.

The SPE will be assigned the responsibilities of operation, exploration and maintenance of the Lobito/Luau railway infrastructure, (with the possibility of building a branch connecting to Zambia), the rail freight service on the Lobito/Luau railway .

It will also be responsible for the construction, operation and operation of two freight transit terminals to support the rail freight transport service on the Lobito/Luau railway, one in Lobito and the other in Luau, the management of a training center , in the province of Huambo, and the operation, operation and maintenance of the railway workshops.

The proposals must be submitted by the 7th of December of this year, with the concession having a term of 30 years, during which the SPE concessionaire will assume the transport of large cargoes, with greater predominance of minerals and fuels, while the public transport service passenger and light cargo will remain under the management of the Benguela Railway.

The terms of the concession also include the integration of the Porto do Lobito Mineral Terminal.
