Protest in Zaire province ends with five injured including one minor

Police reported that five people were injured, including a minor, during protests by a group of individuals in Zaire province, police officials announced Saturday.

A press release states that the incident occurred following the security activities allusive to September 17, National Hero's Day, when a group of identified individuals tried to violate the security perimeters of the public security forces deployed in the area where the activity took place.

According to the police, the group of people threw sharp objects (stones, bottles and burning tires), against the staff, "seriously altering the public security situation, endangering the physical integrity of the force, people and property on site".

The police response action "with proportional means," the document stresses, "to safeguard life," resulted in the injury of two National Police officers and three civilians, "who were promptly rescued and assisted at the Provincial Hospital of Zaire, and are in a stable clinical condition".

According to the police, there was also material damage to three vehicles, one of which belonged to the police and another to the fire department.

Among the injured is a 15-year-old minor, while the other two civilians are 19 and 23 years old.

On the police side, meanwhile, a 30-year-old first class officer and another 33-year-old were injured.

"All the victims were in danger and are being treated as outpatients," the note stresses, underlining that the situation of contempt and rioting will be subject to civil and criminal liability.
