Bornito de Sousa at Jorge Sampaio's funeral. Vice delivered a message from JLO to Marcelo

Angola's Vice President, Bornito de Sousa, participated this Sunday in the funeral of former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, representing the head of State, João Lourenço, said in a statement the Angolan embassy in Lisbon.

The official, who arrived in the Portuguese capital on Saturday night, was received at the military airport of Figo Maduro by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Cooperation and Foreign Affairs, Francisco André, by the Angolan ambassador to Portugal, Carlos Alberto Fonseca, and by some national diplomats, the statement needs.

Bornito de Sousa paid "an official tribute" and attended the funeral for former Portuguese head of state, Jorge Sampaio.

In the afternoon, he was received in audience by the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, to whom he delivered a message from President João Lourenço.

On his visit to Portugal, in addition to members of his cabinet, the vice president was accompanied by the secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Domingos Vieira Lopes.

The communiqué also recalls President João Lourenço's message of condolences "addressed to the Portuguese family and people, in which he expressed a "deep feeling of regret" for the death of Jorge Sampaio, who he considered a "man of high culture" and "a personality of great importance in Portuguese democratic life".

Jorge Sampaio, former secretary general of the PS (1989/1992) and President of the Republic (1996/2006), died on Friday, aged 81, at the Hospital de Santa Cruz, in Carnaxide, Oeiras, where he had been hospitalized since 27 August, following breathing difficulties.

The funeral, with state honors, took place this Sunday, preceded by a national tribute at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, in Lisbon.
