The position expressed in a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stresses that the Lusophone country is following "with great concern" the events that took place in Guinea on Sunday, which "culminated with the arrest of Professor Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea-Conakry, and the seizure of power by a group of Special Forces."

"In view of the gravity of the facts, the Republic of Angola condemns this coup attempt, an anti-democratic and unconstitutional act, which violates the principles of the African Union's Algiers and Lomé Declarations of 1999 and 2000 on unconstitutional changes," the document stresses.

In the note, Angola stresses that it supports the Joint Declaration of the President-in-Office of the African Union and the President of the African Union Commission, as well as the Declaration of the President-in-Office of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

"The Republic of Angola therefore expresses its solidarity with the Guinean people, calls on the perpetrators of this act to unconditionally release President Alpha Condé and to preserve his physical integrity, as well as urges the prompt return to constitutional order, in safeguard of peace and stability" in the Republic of Guinea-Conakry, the statement said.

At the end of July this year, the President, João Lourenço, made a two-day visit to the Republic of Guinea-Conakry at the invitation of Alpha Condé, during which he was decorated with the Grand Cross of the National Order of that country.

The coup plotters captured President Alpha Condé and dissolved the country's state institutions last Sunday. A nighttime curfew was instituted, and the country's constitution and National Assembly were both dissolved.

The military junta has refused to reveal when it intends to release Condé, but has assured that the deposed President, who is 83 years old, has access to medical care and his doctors.

ECOWAS has called for Alpha Condé's immediate release and threatened to impose sanctions if this demand is not met.

Mamady Doumbouya announced in a video released after the coup the creation of a "National Committee for Grouping and Development," with the aim of "initiating a national consultation to open an inclusive and peaceful transition."

The alleged coup attempt has already been condemned by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which also demanded the "immediate" and "unconditional" release of Guinea-Conakry President Alpha Condé, as did the African Union and also France.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has also condemned "any seizure of power by force of arms.

Guinea-Conakry, a West African country bordering Guinea-Bissau, is one of the poorest countries in the world and is facing a political and economic crisis in recent months, aggravated by the covid-19 pandemic.
