Covid-19: Africa with 251 more deaths and 6647 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 251 deaths associated with covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 209,998, and 6647 new infections, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the cumulative total of cases of infection on the continent since the start of the pandemic is now 8,275,465 and that of recovered is 7,600,246, plus 7771 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,870,363 cases and 108,747 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,896,943 cases and 87,052 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has reached 2,513,196 SARS-CoV-2 virus infections and 67,306 deaths associated with covid-19.

East Africa has 1,010,464 infections and 21,137 deaths, and the West African region has 644,636 infections and 9463 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 236,806 and 3345 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 24,732 deaths and 704,914 infected, followed by Egypt, with 17,187 deaths and 301,625 cases, and Morocco, with 925,507 infections, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 14,167 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5777 deaths and 202,772 people infected, Ethiopia, with 5401 fatalities and 341,714 infections, and Kenya, with 5102 deaths associated with the disease and 248,461 accumulated infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1909 deaths associated with the disease and 150,530 infected accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1501 deaths and 55,121 cases), Cape Verde (335 deaths and 37,428 infections), Equatorial Guinea (142 deaths and 11,806 cases), Guinea-Bissau (135 deaths and 6099 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (47 deaths and 3295 infections).
