Covid-19: Africa with 693 more deaths and 15,145 new cases in the last 24 hours

The african continent has recorded 693 more covid-19 associated deaths and 15,145 new cases of infection with the disease in the past 24 hours, according to data from the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

According to the CDC, with these new figures, the total number of cases in Africa has risen to 8,039,647, while the number of deaths now stands at 203,608 and the number of recovered cases has risen to 7,328,656, up 26,121 from the previous day.

The Southern African region remains the most affected region on the continent, with 3,802,381 cases and 105,850 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which has 2,858,195 cases and 84,877 deaths.

North Africa succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, reaching a total of 2,444,008 cases and 65,492 deaths associated with the disease in the last 24 hours.

East Africa accounts for almost one million cases (940,979) and 19,620 deaths, and the West African region records 626,826 cases of infection and 9117 deaths.

Central Africa, meanwhile, is the least affected by the pandemic with 225,453 total recorded cases and 3529 deaths associated with the disease.

Tunisia remains the second african country with the most deaths after South Africa, recording a total of 24,244 deaths and 685,799 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,871 deaths and 292,957 cases of infection, and Morocco, with 13,546 deaths and 904,647 people infected with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are also Algeria, with 5583 deaths and 200,096 people infected, Ethiopia, with 4929 deaths and 323,104 infections, and Kenya, with 4906 deaths associated with the disease and 243,725 registered cases.

Regarding the portuguese speaking countries, Mozambique accounts for 1892 deaths associated with the disease and 149,207 accumulated cases since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1339 deaths and 50,446 cases), Cape Verde (321 deaths and 36,588 infections), Equatorial Guinea (131 deaths and 10,498 cases), Guinea-Bissau (125 deaths and 6022 infected) and Sao Tome and Principe (39 deaths and 2814 infections).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,622,410 deaths worldwide, among more than 224.2 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent assessment by the Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
