Covid-19: Africa Registers 7,990,337 Infections and 201,971 Deaths Since Pandemic Start

The African continent has registered 7,990,337 cases of covid-19 infection since the start of the pandemic, 201,971 deaths associated with the disease and 7,241,169 people recovered from infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to official data.

According to the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the southern African region is the most affected region on the continent, with 3,784,680 cases and 105,220 deaths associated with covid-19. In this region, is the country most affected by the pandemic, South Africa, which accounts for 2,843,042 cases and 84,327 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, reached 2,425,540 infected and 64,978 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa counts 933,972 infections and 19,489 deaths, and the West Africa region registers 622,221 cases of infection and 9053 deaths. Central Africa has the fewest cases of infection and deaths, 223,924 and 3231 respectively.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most fatalities after South Africa, registers 24,041 deaths and 680,074 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,836 deaths and 291,585 cases of infection, and Morocco, which accounts for the second largest number of infections across the continent, 896,913 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, 13,370 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the countries most affected are also Algeria, with 5524 deaths and 199,303 infected people, Kenya, with 4,864 deaths associated with the disease and 242,284 infections, and Ethiopia, with 4857 fatalities and 320,453 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique has 1,891 deaths associated with the disease and 148,727 have accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by Angola (1313 deaths and 49,628 cases), Cape Verde (318 deaths and 36,327 infections), Equatorial Guinea (129 deaths and 10,284 cases), Guinea-Bissau (124 deaths and 5958 infected) and São Tomé and Príncipe (39 deaths and 2738 infections).
