Parque do Makufi is new ‘ex-libris of Lubango’ with 11 thousand square meters of fresh air

The ‘Walia Wenda’, which until 2014 was nothing more than a shantytown, now gives way to Parque do Makufi, a public leisure space covering 11,000 square meters and where various entertainment and physical activity equipment is installed.

Right in the center of Lubango and on the banks of the river that gives it its name, the park is scheduled to open next week.

Sports courts, kiosks and an open-air amphitheater are some of the main features. The area - all refurbished - has three basketball courts, a sports center, circuit for equipment for physical maintenance, toilets, pedestrian streets, garden benches, ornamental and public lighting, water, energy and afforestation points, said the coordinator of the project of integrated infrastructures from Lubango to Angop.

The river was also cleaned: “Mukufi is a river that runs through the city and was in a precarious situation, as it was very silted and needed to be cleaned and then desorption, allowing the creation of dams, in the form of waterfalls, which provide a beautiful aesthetic vision, ”added João Dinheiro.

The construction works for the integrated infrastructure of Lubango, the capital of Huíla - in which it fits - were consigned in July 2017, having started in October of the same year. They are budgeted at over 212 million dollars and are expected to be completed in December. They are conducted by a consortium of local companies, Omatapalo and Imossul.

In total, the works cover integrated infrastructure, roads and social facilities. 31 streets and another pre-existing park were intervened.

Lubango municipality occupies an area of 3140 square kilometers and is home to almost one million inhabitants.
