Secretary-General appoints new coordinator of the United Nations system in Angola

The Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres appointed this Tuesday to the position of coordinator of the United Nations system in Angola the Canadian Zahira Virani, who has already played this role in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The UN indicated that Zahira Virani was also approved by the Government of Angola for the role of resident coordinator.

According to the international organization, the Canadian brings more than 20 years of experience in humanitarian and development organizations.

Before being the UN resident coordinator in São Tomé and Príncipe, Zahira Virani held several important positions in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Having worked for UNDP in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Panama and Tajikistan, Zahira Virani will succeed Pier Paolo Balladelli in office.

There is still no date announced for the transfer to Angola of the new coordinator of the United Nations system.

The Canadian has a master's degree in science from the London School of Economics, in the United Kingdom, and a degree from Whittier College, in the United States of America.
