According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), in the past 24 hours the death toll in the organization's 55 member states has risen to 35,007, there have been an additional 7712 cases and the number of recovered is now 1,184,645, plus 9292.
Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases of infection and deaths, with 17,512 fatalities in a universe of 727,503 infected.
In South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, there are 667,049 cases and 16,283 deaths.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 314,057 people infected and 10,610 killed and, in West Africa, the number of infections is 173,932, with 2587 fatalities.
The East Africa region now accounts for 164,215 cases and records 3223 fatalities and, in Central Africa, 57,365 cases and 1075 deaths are recorded.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 5835 deaths and 102,513 infected, and Morocco accounts for 1956 deaths and 110,099 cases.
Algeria followed, with 50,582 cases of infection registered, having passed the two thousand fatalities (2003).
Among the six most affected countries are Nigeria, with 57,849 infected and 1102 dead, and Ethiopia with 71,687 cases, with 1148 fatalities.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.
Angola records 159 deaths and 4363 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 fatalities and 5,018 infected), Cape Verde (55 dead and 5479 cases) and Mozambique (51 deaths and 7399 infected).
Guinea-Bissau maintains 39 deaths and the number of infected (2324), as does São Tomé and Príncipe: 15 deaths out of 908 cases.
