Regional Council says AG of the Medical Association "will wash dirty clothes" of the class

The chairman of the assembly table of the northern regional council of the Order of Doctors (Ormed) said that the body "has legitimacy" to call the general assembly "to wash clothes" and "confer dignity" on the institution.

The extraordinary general meeting, convened for 17 October next, has as its only point the "dismissal of the president" of Ormed, Elisa Gaspar, accused of mismanagement and embezzlement of funds from the institution.

Arlete Nangassole Tomás Luyele stated, in an interview with Lusa, that the current management of the Order "is marked by very serious non-conformities", including accusations of a financial nature, which it prefers to refer to Organs competent bodies, and "burning internal problems" due to the vacancy of the plenary regional councils.

"There are very serious non-conformities, but for the sake of ethics, I use the saying that dirty laundry is washed at home. We have a lot of dirty laundry to be washed and the right place for this washing will be at the general meeting on October 17th" , he noticed.

The official also wanted to make it clear that "it is not the president of the regional council who intends the dismissal of the president, the dismissal or not of the free will of the members".

The chairman of the board of the northern regional council of Ormed, who says there is "a lot of turmoil around her" guarantees that she is not responsible for the dismissal of the president and also called for the safeguarding of her physical integrity in the course of this process.

"We have already gone through bitter experiences and I take the opportunity to make an appeal to my physical integrity during the ongoing process. This process is peaceful and we will supervise until the end with a view to returning dignity to Ormed", he concluded.

As for the convocation of the assembly by the northern regional council of Ormed, announced on Wednesday, it results from the "vacancy" of the plenary of the regional councils and of the provincial assemblies of Ormed, indicated Arlete Luyele.

The northern regional council of the Ordem dos Médicos comprises the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Zaire, Uíje and Cabinda.

According to the doctor, the Order is currently operating with only two regional assemblies, namely the south and north regional councils, which comprise 70 percent of the doctors registered with Ormed.

The inexistence of the plenary session of the regional councils "causes the responsibility to fall to the table of the assembly of regional councils (...) which has the obligation and legitimacy to convene the general assembly with the legal prerogative", he explained.

Statutory, he said, the doctor "must defend the good name and prestige of the Order and that is what we are doing, acting in solidarity in defense of all collective interests", he insisted.

And he continued: "Basically, we are following the statutes and the regional table is just formalizing the process (...) and simply wants to restore dignity to the order and the president".

Elisa Gaspar, who has served as president of Ormed for more than a year, is accused of "misappropriation of funds and harmful management" of the institution, including an alleged diversion of 19 million kwanzas and "other unjustified expenses".

Denunciations of alleged embezzlement, attributed to the president of the Angolan Medical Association, were recently presented by the former head of his office, Domingos Kiala Cristóvão. However, doctor Elisa Gaspar denied the charges and "minimized the allegations".

In a statement, released on Tuesday, the northern regional fiscal council of the Order of Doctors of Angola requested an external audit of the professional order accounts for alleged "misappropriation of funds, various irregularities and harmful management" attributed to the physician Elisa Gaspar.
