Covid-19: Africa's death toll rose to 33,403

The death toll in Africa due to covid-19 has risen to 33,403 in the past 24 hours, after another 152 deaths, with infections reaching 1,131,838, according to official data.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the past 24 hours there have been an additional 5923 cases of infection in the 55 member states of the organization.

Recovered are now 1,131,838, after registering more than 4803 since Thursday.

Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases and deaths: 16,941 dead and 711,957. South Africa, the continent's most affected country, now accounts for 655,572 cases and 15,772 deaths.

North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 284,603 people infected and 9760 killed and in West Africa the number of infections is 170,427, with 2,553 fatalities.

The East African region has 156,219 cases and 3,058 deaths, the same number as Thursday. In Central Africa there are 56,703 cases and 1066 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 5715 deaths and 101,641 infected and Morocco counts 1686 deaths and 92,016 cases. Algeria now has 1654 deaths and 49,197 cases.

In the six most affected countries are also Nigeria, with 56,735 infected and 1093 dead, and Ethiopia, with 66,913 infected and 1060 dead.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.

Angola records 144 deaths and 3789 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5002 cases, the same ones advanced Thursday by the national authorities), Cape Verde (49 deaths and 5063 cases), Mozambique (39 dead and 6161 cases) .

Guinea-Bissau (39 dead and 2,303 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 killed and 906 cases) maintain Thursday's data.
