According to the spokesman of the Luanda provincial command of the National Police, Nestor Goubel, the incident occurred on Thursday, around 9 pm, in the operational territory of the Petrangol police station, more specifically at the police station in the Ossos neighborhood.
Nestor Goubel said that a group of people took a presumed perpetrator of the crime of theft to the police station and, unhappy with the way the agents were treating him, started acts of disorder and pillaging inside the police station.
In order to restore the order, "one of the agents of the said police station, fired a shot, which accidentally ricocheted and hit young Helena Mussunda mortally," he said.
The official stressed that the agent involved in this incident is already detained and will be present to the Public Ministry.
The provincial command called on residents of the Ossos neighborhood to remain calm and serene, stressing that the police officer is already being held responsible. "There is no need to commit acts of vandalism on a public good," he said.
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, Nestor Goubel said that the situation was already under control, confirming that the popular people even set fire to the police post.
In the past few days, there have been several cases of police officers involved in the death of citizens. One of the most publicized involved a doctor, who after being questioned by police officers and taken to a police station for not wearing a face mask, died, in circumstances yet to be clarified.
Before this latest incident in Luanda, the police also confirmed, on Wednesday, the death of a citizen in Huíla province, by an agent, at the time of duty, when he went to the aid of his daughter, who was supposedly be beaten by a group of young people.
