Government moves forward with privatization of 15 percent of Unitels share capital

The government will privatize 15 percent of the share capital of telecommunications operator Unitel, with 2 percent of that quota being reserved for workers and members of the company's governing bodies, according to a presidential order.

The shares representing 15 percent of Unitel's share capital will be privatized through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), an operation that will be under the responsibility of the Angola Debt and Stock Exchange (BODIVA).

President João Lourenço, in an order dated August 23 already published in Diário da República and consulted by Lusa, also authorizes the reservation of 2 percent of shares for acquisition, "under special conditions", by workers and members of the company's corporate bodies. company, in accordance with the law.

The partial privatization of the shares that the State holds in Unteil – the largest national telecommunications operator – is part of the Privatization Program (ProPriv 2023-2026), says the document.

The State nationalized the 25 percent stakes of Vidatel and 25 percent of Geni in Unitel in October 2022, which were held by businesswoman Isabel dos Santos and general Leopoldino Fragoso do Nascimento "Dino".

The operator is fully owned by the State through the State Asset and Participation Management Institute (IGAPE) and the oil company Sonangol.
