Road accident leaves eight dead in Huíla province

Eight people were burned to death in the province of Huíla, due to a fire in the vehicle they were travelling in after a collision with a truck, the local fire service reported.

According to the commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Service, Chief Inspector Eduardo Cabunguela, the alert about the incident was given at around 10:00 am this Friday, on National Road 280.

The official, who was speaking to Angolan Public Television, said that the accident involved a truck with containers and a vehicle that was operating as a taxi.

Eduardo Cabunguela stressed that eight injured people were rescued and taken to the Doutor António Agostinho Neto central hospital.

On National Road 230, the rollover of a National Police patrol car in the province of Malanje caused three deaths, including one police officer, as well as four serious injuries, with two people being arrested.

Road accidents are the second leading cause of death in the country, after malaria, with figures that are worrying the authorities.

In 2023, Angola recorded 3,121 deaths and 17,902 injuries from a total of 14,429 road accidents.
