On 20 and 21 August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the 3rd Ministerial Meeting between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda, under Angolan mediation, to analyse the Proposal for a Peace Agreement proposed by the President of the Republic of Angola, in his capacity as Facilitator appointed by the African Union.
The delegations were led by Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Francophonie of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Rwanda.
According to Mirex, the ministerial meeting took place in a "serene and fraternal" atmosphere, with the parties reiterating their commitment to working together to find a lasting solution to the conflict affecting the east of the DRC.
In order to address specific aspects of the Agreement, the ministers decided to hold a Meeting of Experts, scheduled for 29 and 30 August.
The ministers also agreed to meet again on 9 and 10 September in Luanda.
It is recalled that the meeting resulted from the decision taken during the recent, separate meetings held by President João Lourenço with his counterparts Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda. The proposal submitted to the parties aims to reach an understanding regarding a negotiated and peaceful solution to the conflict prevailing in the eastern region of the DRC, which worsened at the end of 2023.
