Government spent eight percent less on fuel purchases in the second quarter

Angola purchased 1.1 million metric tons of fuel in the second quarter of 2024 valued at 689 million dollars, down 8 percent from the previous quarter, according to official data.

Around 59.4 percent of the total volume purchased corresponds to diesel, 22.2 percent to gasoline, 12.3 percent to Fuel Ordoil, 3.8 percent to Jet AI, 1.2 percent to Asphalt Bitumen and the remainder to illuminating oil, according to data from the Regulatory Institute for Petroleum Derivatives (IRDP) released this Thursday.

As for the origin of the acquisitions of liquid fuels, 35.4 percent came from the Luanda Refinery, 0.8 percent from Cabgoc – Toping de Cabinda and 63.8 percent from imports.

During this period, the country had an installed capacity for onshore storage of liquid fuels of 675,968 cubic meters, according to the IRDP summary on commercial activity in the petroleum derivatives market.

At the end of the quarter, there were 1168 service stations in the 18 provinces, of which 896 were operational, mostly belonging to the state-owned Sonangol, followed by Pumangol, Sonangalp, Total Energies and others.

The overall sales volume of the various business segments, namely retail, consumption and bunkering (supply of fuel for ships) in the period in question was approximately 1.2 million metric tons, representing an increase of approximately 3 percent compared to the previous quarter.

In terms of gaseous fuels, in the months of April, May and June, approximately 137 thousand metric tons of cooking gas were introduced into the domestic market, of which 58.3 percent came from the Angola LNG Factory (liquefied natural gas), 33.4 percent from Sanha, 6.1 percent from the Luanda Refinery and 2.2 percent from Topping de Cabinda.

In the lubricants segment, the volume recorded was around 9.5 thousand metric tons sold on the domestic market, by the main companies, representing an increase of approximately 19 percent compared to the first three months of 2024.
