Brazilian investment in Angola grew 67 percent between 2020 and 2021

Angola is the main destination for Brazilian capital in Africa, with investment growing 67 percent between 2020 and 2021 to 1.24 billion dollars, recovering the level reached in 2012.

In comparative terms, the second main destination of Brazilian capital in the African region is South Africa, which absorbed US$103 million in 2021, according to the most recent data from the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex), from April of this year.

Investments are mainly directed towards infrastructure, with Odebrecht being the dominant company, participating in seven projects (New Luanda Airport; Laúca and Cambambe Hydroelectric Power Plants; Barra do Dande Port; Cabinda Oil Refinery and Biocom Factory).

As for the announced "greenfield" projects (root investments), Apex highlights the investment in the new regional headquarters of Transdata ('software') in a new regional headquarters, with an estimated value of 27 million dollars in 2023, and the tourism office from Globalis, to be around 2 million dollars in 2015.

In terms of investment by Angola in Brazil, after a peak of US$1.5 billion in 2013, Angolan capital invested in Brazil in 2021 stood at US$65 million, equivalent to a contraction of 95 percent compared to at the beginning of the decade.

"Some economic factors may have contributed to this reduction: economic crisis in Angola, due to the drop in oil prices, from 2014, Angola's main export product; economic recession in Brazil between 2015 and 2016", justifies the Apex .

Among the flagged "greenfield" projects, the project by Angola Cables, in the telecommunications sector, stands out for the construction of a "data center" in Fortaleza, estimated at US$134 million in 2019 and, subsequently, the announcement of its expansion worth an estimated $40 million.

"The linguistic and cultural similarities can be an important bridge for investments between the countries", highlights the Apex.

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who traveled to the BRIC summit in South Africa, will visit Angola between Friday and Saturday, before heading to São Tomé and Príncipe to participate in the conference of heads of state and government of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
