EU diplomacy welcomes “peaceful environment” of elections and calls for response to contestation

The diplomacy of the European Union (EU) welcomed this Monday the “peaceful environment” of the elections in Angola, which gave victory to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), but asked for “all possible efforts” from the electoral authorities to respond to the contestation.

:

"The European Union takes note of the results announced by the National Elections Commission on the Angolan general elections, which [...] were conducted in a peaceful environment", reacted the EU spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in a declaration.

Still, "the EU is aware of complaints from the opposition and civil society about some shortcomings in the electoral process and invites interested parties to use all legal avenues of recourse to address their concerns", she stressed.

On behalf of the EU High Representative, the spokeswoman urged "the electoral authorities to make every possible effort to respond to them [the challenges] in a fair and transparent manner".

"The EU encourages an open, constructive and inclusive dialogue between the Government of Angola, opposition political parties and civil society and recognizes peaceful expressions of opinion as essential for democracy," she added.

In the note, the community diplomacy added that "the Union hopes to work with the elected authorities as soon as the electoral process is concluded, in order to further strengthen the EU-Angola partnership".

The MPLA won the elections with 51.17 percent of the votes against 43.95 percent for the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), according to the final results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

According to the data presented, 44.82 percent of the 14.4 million voters voted, with 1.67 percent of white votes and 1.15 percent of null votes.

The MPLA won 3,209,429 votes, electing 124 deputies, and UNITA won 2,756,786 votes, guaranteeing 90 deputies.

The CNE plenary thus proclaimed the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, head of the MPLA list, the most voted party and vice-president, Esperança da Costa, second on the MPLA list.

The published results confirm the provisional data announced on Friday that already pointed to the victory of the MPLA, which UNITA contests.

The Social Renovation Party (PRS) is the third most voted party with 1.14 percent of the total, electing two deputies, followed by the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), also with two parliamentary seats and 1.06 percent of votes.

The Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) is the new political formation of parliament, debuting with two deputies after winning a vote of 1.02 percent.

The Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola - Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE), which had 16 parliamentarians, lost all seats, not exceeding 0.76 percent of the votes.

The National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and the Nationalist Justice Party (P-Njango) are the other two competing parties that failed to win seats and fell below 0.50 percent and should be declared extinct.
