"We urge all parties to express themselves peacefully and to resolve any complaints in accordance with applicable legal precepts under Angolan law," the State Department spokesperson's office said in a statement.

According to the same note, the United States of America (USA) "observed the broad participation" of Angolans in Wednesday's elections and will continue to "closely monitor the electoral process".

"We look forward to working together on the path towards a safer and more prosperous Angola for all", added the US government office.

The provisional data released by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) indicate a victory with an absolute majority for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), a result already contested by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

The authorities have reinforced policing in sensitive areas of the city and have prevented any demonstration by opponents or activists against the results of the August 24 elections.
