“They are stealing our vote”, heard in neighborhoods of Luanda

In the peripheral districts of the capital, many consult the minutes of Wednesday's general elections and discontent is evident with the results posted at each polling station and the numbers announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

"They are stealing our vote", says Mauro Jorge, next to Assembly 832, in Viana. There, together with the Instituto Superior Técnico Militar, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) won by a large margin, even with an electoral universe with many elements of the defense forces.

"What the TPA [Public Television of Angola] passed on yesterday are just numbers. It could be those or others, just make it up. We want the count from the summary minutes posted on each site", said Mauro Jorge, referring to the data CNE preliminary polls, which indicate that the MPLA won the elections with 52.08 percent of the votes, followed by UNITA, with 42.98 percent, when 86.41 percent of the votes are counted.

In these elections, for the first time, the summary minutes of each polling station are being posted in a public place, assembly by assembly, and this Thursday morning, crowds of people were visible next to the papers, to confirm the results.

At the age of 27, Mauro Jorge voted on Wednesday for the first time. "I didn't believe in politics before. But today I want change and I'm not going to shut up. If everyone has alternation, why can't Angola have it?"

"And if Adalberto [Costa Júnior, leader of UNITA] doesn't do the right thing in the government in the next elections, we'll put another party in the government. We want the politicians to listen to the people", adds Mauro Jorge.

At another polling station, António Videira, 46, also voted for UNITA. "The first time I voted was for the regime, but not today. Today is to change that", he explains.

And given the discrepancy between the announced preliminary results and the minutes published at polling stations, there are those who argue that voters should "pressurize".

"The CNE has to accept the vote of the people. We know how democracy works in other countries, why Angola is different" – asks, dismayed, António Videira.

In WhatsApp groups and social networks, photos of the summary minutes of Luanda and several provinces of the country circulate with the victory of UNITA.

"Even in Quilamba and Paz Flor, bro. Until then, where only the rich live, UNITA won, bro. How is that possible, bro? The MPLA took a bath and now they're cheating on us", says André, outraged at official data released.

André goes further and says that the solution for the elections has to be transparent. "It has to be a summary, all right, as we have the photos. And if they don't accept, we have to go and put pressure on the house of the CNE president, who cannot steal from us", he warns.

Rui Santos, 32, goes even further: "This can only be resolved with the people on the street up to the [presidential] palace."
