Adalberto Costa Júnior appeals to vote and criticizes process

The UNITA leader appealed to Angolans to vote in the general elections this Wednesday, but criticized the electoral procedures, giving the example of his polling station in which the voters' rolls were not distributed to the inspectors.

Voting in Luanda's 28 de Agosto neighborhood, a neighborhood of old houses and dirt floors, Adalberto Costa Júnior said he hoped that "the votes would all be counted" in the elections in which the National Union for the Independence of Angola (UNITA), tries to dethrone the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

"I did my update" of the electoral register and "I realized that I was moved to another place", but "I was satisfied and voted among my people and found that the vote is being carried out without electoral registers for the inspectors, only a electoral register on the table", told the journalists Adalberto Costa Júnior, moments after voting at Escola Estrela da Manhã, in the Kilamba area.

"Still, I appeal to all Angolans: let's all vote. Today is a historic day and a day when I hope that everyone votes in an environment of absolute tranquility and respect for the laws", stated Costa Júnior.

The UNITA candidate said he hoped that it would be possible to "comply with the party that is the elections" and that "the votes are all, but all are respected".

The fifth general elections in Angola perpetuate the dispute between the country's two main parties, the MPLA and UNITA, which are trying to win a majority of the 220 seats in the National Assembly.

João Lourenço, current President, is trying for a second term and his main opponent is Adalberto Costa Júnior.

In total, eight political formations are running, trying to win the vote of 14.4 million voters. The approximately 13,000 polling stations in the country and the diaspora will be open between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm (same time in Lisbon).

The electoral process, which has around 1,300 national and international observers, has been criticized by the opposition, considering it not very transparent.
