Statements by MPLA leader who rule out possible electoral defeat are “very dangerous”, considers sociologist

Angolan sociologist Paulo Inglês considered this Tuesday “extremely aggressive and very dangerous” the statements of an MPLA leader who called the UNITA leader a “lunatic” for thinking about winning the next general elections.

"It's just that the communication of Jú Martins (MPLA secretary for political and electoral matters) was extremely aggressive and very dangerous, because deep down it is as if he were telling us that thinking about the possibility of the party that supports the Government not winning these elections was almost crazy", Paulo Inglês told Lusa this Tuesday.

For the sociologist, what makes democracy possible is the possibility of any party winning or losing the elections: "If only one party has to win, this is not democracy, this is authoritarianism, that's what he came to claim."

Deep down, "what he (João "Jú" Martins) came to say is as if the elections were a theater, it's as if you can't think about it, it's forbidden to think about it, because it's unimaginable to think that someone can win it without being what is already in power".

"This is absolutely disgusting and dangerous in an electoral contest, of course if people are making an effort, even if the MPLA, UNITA or another party, that is what makes democracy possible", he stressed.

"Assuming that this is not possible, then why are we holding elections, why are we spending money on election campaigns?", he asked.

The MPLA secretary for political and electoral affairs, Jú Martins, denied, on Monday, in Luanda, the existence of negotiations and called the UNITA leader a "lunatic" for thinking about winning the 24 August elections.

Jú Martins said that he was approached by the president of the MPLA parliamentary group, in order to make himself available for a meeting with the president of UNITA, of which he gave a note to the president of the party (João Lourenço, also President of the Republic of Angola and who is a re-candidate for the charge) and which took place on the 27th of May, in a hotel in Luanda.

Over the course of three and a half hours, problems of the current political moment were discussed, namely the voter lists and the treatment of the database, as well as the visibility given to UNITA by the public press, but issues related to the transition were not addressed.

"What transition, what business", underlined Martins, adding that, to deal with matters of this nature, they would have to be mandated by the party's leadership", and not just by its leader, since "power is conquered, not negotiated".

In the opinion of Paulo Inglês, "in politics there are no confidential conversations, but confidential matters that do not go public", referring that what the leader of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, did "was to get out of a trap".

"And I think that he (Adalberto Costa Júnior) now, seeing from afar, was smart to make public a trap that had been laid on him", he noted.

Alluding to the intervention of the MPLA official, in a press conference, Paulo Inglês believes that the "comrades" party is not prepared for the transition, admitting even a defeat of the MPLA "may cause instability in the country".

Now "it seems that what can cause instability is the defeat of the MPLA, it's like if the MPLA loses the elections it can lead to instability in the country, because they don't even put this hypothesis, I mean, this is what is dangerous", he noted.

Because, he added, "to say that anyone who thinks that the MPLA can lose the elections is lunatic is extremely dangerous, because it is one thing to say that we trust in our actions and another thing is not even to put the chance, this is extremely dangerous and that is not democracy".

On the issue of the presence of dead citizens in the voters' computer file, an issue also addressed by Jú Martins and heavily criticized by the opposition and Angolan civil society, the sociologist spoke of "inconsistency" on the part of the authorities.

"The point is not, whether the dead are in the file or not, the point is that the minister (of Territory Administration) said they would not be, but after all they are, what is incoherent is the minister's speech", he stressed.

"As we already have a climate of mistrust, I think it was important to be careful not to leave flanks open to mistrust, but this has nothing to do with political parties, but with decency and courtesy", he justified.

The "elements of mistrust must be eliminated, because when the minister presented the file he guaranteed to remove the dead, but the dead persist in the database", concluded Paulo Inglês.

This Tuesday, in statements to Lusa, Adalberto Costa Júnior reiterated that he had held meetings with MPLA leaders to address a possible post-electoral transition and criticized opponents for defending illegalities and threatening instability to remain in power.

The fifth general elections in Angola's political history are scheduled for 24 August and eight political forces, already in the electoral campaign, are competing for the election.
