Police deny having instructed security companies to hand over weapons

The Angolan National Police this Tuesday denied having guided security companies to hand over their weapons, warning them not to obey these instructions and appealing for calm and vigilance.

The denial of information circulating on social media was made by Nestor Goubel, spokesman for the Luanda Provincial Command of the National Police, on the eve of Angola's general elections.

"Police in Luanda appealed for calm and vigilance, especially to security companies, so that they do not [obey] this guidance from anyone", as it does not correspond to the truth, said the official, in a press release, also appealing to the serenity of the population, "especially [in the face of] appeals from the national police".

Nestor Goubel said that the indication that the leaders of political parties should remain in a single place where they will be watched by the police is also false.

The police also appealed to the population to return to their home immediately after exercising their right to vote.

UNITA and civil society organizations have asked voters to stay close to polling stations after the vote, in order to check for possible irregularities.

The police on Monday presented the forces that will guarantee the security of the fifth general elections and that are also prepared to respond to any attempt to subvert public order and tranquility.

The general commander, Arnaldo Carlos, appealed to the population to avoid getting involved in acts that could subvert public order and underlined that "the law requires civic and orderly conduct, and the presence in polling stations of intoxicated individuals is prohibited and of those who have already exercised their right to vote".

Some embassies have recommended surveillance to foreign communities residing in Angola, advising against the presence "in large clusters of people" due to the proximity of Wednesday's general elections.

More than 14 million Angolans are called to the polls to choose a new President and representatives in the National Assembly in elections disputed by eight political formations.
