Similar to the league in the United States of America (USA), in the competition – which has the support of the local government, Panafricare, the NBA and an oil company – the municipality of Belas will be in the Western Conference, while the municipality of Talatona will be in the Eastern Conference. To this end, according to Angop, each school must present two teams made up of 12 members, male and female, aged between 10 and 16.

According to the coordinator of the initiative, José Pedro, the project promotes academic interest through a programme that encourages students to dedicate themselves more to studying mathematics, engineering, physics, among other subjects.

In statements to the press, the person in charge said that the aim is to discover new talents in the sports through schools, encourage them to join professional clubs and encourage them to take training in technical courses, such as medicine and technology.

Furthermore, according to Angop, the program also includes guidance for physical education teachers, who will lead the teams in the competition, as well as possible new features in the match venues.

On the occasion, Orlando Lundoloqui, National Director of Secondary Education, quoted by Angop, said that this is a project that contributes significantly to the progress of sports in schools, and also considered that another particularity of the event is to further strengthen the sport, as well as introduce an essential element in terms of developing science, which has been little explored until now.

Wirsiy Peter, Panafricare's representative in the country, said that basketball was chosen because many children enjoy playing it, and that it was aligned with the initiative to encourage them to take an interest in scientific studies, while Fernando Pegado, representative of the oil company, said that including his company in the initiative aims to strengthen the practice of sports in schools, through basketball, and help students improve their academic skills.

According to Angop, this is the first action of its kind, with the participation of secondary schools, with the Jr. NBA having already organised several 'camps' with children linked to professional clubs.
