Cape Verde defeats Angola at the start of Afrobasket

Cape Verde beat Angola, the record holder for continental titles, 77-71 after overtime in the first round of Group A of the African Basketball Championship.

The Angolans, who have 11 titles in Afrobasket and six more podium finishes, even went into halftime leading by eight points (20-12), but the Cape Verdeans, whose best performance was a third place, managed to surprise and win.

After trailing by six points in the last half, the Cape Verdeans went into the fourth period with a strong fourth-period lead and ended the regulation time with the score tied at 66 points.

This was the result in the last minute, when the game was interrupted for a few minutes due to a problem on one of the boards.

In the extra time, Cape Verde was better and finished with a score of 11-5, getting their first win in the competition being held in Rwanda.

Edy Tavares, a Real Madrid player, was the best Cape Verdean scorer, with 20 points, to which he added 18 rebounds and six deflections.

Carlos Morais was the best among the Angolans, with 21 points.

With one day played in Group A, hosts Rwanda and Cape Verde lead with one win, while Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo have lost their opening matches.

On Thursday, Cape Verde faces the Congolese team and Angola plays Rwanda.
