Union confederation guarantees "fight" for a minimum wage of 300 dollars

The new secretary general of the National Union of Angolan Workers – Trade Union Confederation (UNTA-CS), José Joaquim Laurindo, defended this Monday a national minimum wage of 300 dollars guaranteeing “negotiating until exhaustion” with the authorities for its materialization .

According to the new executive leader in UNTA-CS, elected on Saturday, the revision of the General Labor Law (LGT) and a new ceiling for the national minimum wage of US$300 constitute "hottest and most immediate issues" in his term.

"We have been defending a minimum wage equivalent to US$300, given the difficulties the country has, we are asking for this minimum, which we are going to negotiate until exhaustion," stated José Joaquim Laurindo in statements to Lusa.

An "incessant work" with unions affiliated with UNTA-CS to identify the obstacles faced by Angolan workers is also part of the challenges faced by the new union leader.

"This will require greater sharpness on our part at country level and create objective conditions for a permanent dialogue with all private and state employers," he underlined.

José Joaquim Laurindo, who beat two other candidates for the position in the competition, said that he is aware of the constant demands of workers, defending constant dialogue with the employers, without discarding pressure mechanisms if the same does not take effect.

The new secretary-general of UNTA-CS only takes office in the second half of September after swearing in the national executive commission, composed of all 18 provincial unions and intermediate associations.

Filomena António Soares, candidate defeated at Saturday's congress, will occupy the position of assistant secretary general of the union confederation, after accepting the invitation of José Joaquim Laurindo.
