Angola with "worrying cases" of teenage pregnancies and marriages

The Minister of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women, Faustina Alves, expressed on Monday her concern with teenage pregnancies and marriages, which continue to be registered in the country, without, however, providing a statistical picture.

:

According to Faustina Alves, early pregnancies and teenage marriages are a concern of the ministerial department she heads, "especially because these marriages occur in communities" and in people according to their traditions "or even in certain unknown areas."

"And we have to try to find a way to make a survey, a study, to take a sample to see how it is, if they happen more in rural or urban areas," she said.

The governor, who did not point out any statistics, spoke only of "denunciations and some findings", emphasizing the process of rehousing families from the Povoado neighborhood, in Luanda, following a fire.

"There we verified many pregnant adolescents and with babies and they were the first ones that we protected, this means that even inside the city we already have a high number of pregnant minors and/or with two or three children", he explained.

"We have to try to reverse this situation, because she (the adolescent) is in a phase of growth and the other more serious problem is that she doesn't evolve and in most cases the father doesn't assist and she has to go in search of support and doesn't grow", she sustained.

Faustina Alves was speaking at the end of a working meeting with the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Angola, Mady Biaye.

The need to promote the fight against social inequalities, the increase of safety places for victims of gender-based violence and the strengthening of the system of collection and analysis of statistical data are "some of the challenges" of that ministerial body.

The Ministry of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women and UNFPA are working in Angola in the areas of protection and combating domestic violence, in the field of sexual and reproductive health, prevention of maternal, infant and neonatal deaths, among others.
