Nations Population Fund calls for “acceleration” of gender policies

The Fund of Nations for Population (UNFPA, its acronym in English) in Angola regretted the reduced implementation of the work plan on gender, at 16 percent, initialed with the authorities, advocating acceleration to more than 50 percent.

The implementation of the work plan in the area of gender signed between the Ministry of Social Action, Family and Women Promotion (Masfamu) and the UN agency is at 16 percent, said the UNFPA representative in Angola, Mady Biaye.

"That's why we say that we must speed up the process (...), an annual work plan is an activity plan that takes place during the year, as we are already in the last half of the year, so we should normally be a little more half in terms of percentage of expenditure implementation," said the official.

Mady Biaye defends the acceleration of actions in this area because "they should already be at more than 50 percent in terms of completion".

The UNFPA representative in Angola was received by the minister of Social Action, Family and Women Promotion, Faustina Alves, and then held a working meeting assisted by the press.

The need to revise the Angolan Family Code was defended by Mady Biaye, who "should also raise the legal age of marriage to 18 years for girls and boys without allowing exceptions".

For the responsible, the authorities must also "promote secondary education, learning and skills of the measures".

"Adopting measures to address the underlying social norms that perpetuate gender-discriminatory practices, including gender-based violence and child marriage," further pointed out the UNFPA representative in Angola.

Faustina Alves, on the occasion, expressed concern about teenage pregnancies and marriages, "which continue" to be registered in the country, without, however, putting forward a statistical framework.
According to the minister, early pregnancies and teenage marriages are a concern of the ministerial department she directs.
