CPLP Executive Secretary begins three-day visit to Angola on Monday

The executive secretary of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) starts on Monday a three-day visit, the first, to Angola, which presides over the organization, where he will meet with the president, it was announced Friday.

:

In a statement, the CPLP said that during the trip, between August 30 and September 1, Zacarias da Costa "will be received in audience by the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço," also acting president of the Lusophone organization.

An official source told Lusa that the meeting with João Lourenço will take place on August 31, the second day of what is the first official visit of the Timorese Zacarias Albano da Costa since he took office, at the XIII Conference of Heads of State and Government of the organization, which took place on July 17, in Luanda.

At the summit in which Angola assumed the presidency of the CPLP, succeeding the Cape Verdean presidency, the heads of state and government committed to strengthen the partnership in the area of trade and investment between Portuguese-speaking countries to promote economic recovery after the covid-19 pandemic and paved the way for the creation of a fourth pillar in the organization: the economic one.

At the meeting, the Agreement on Mobility within the community space was also approved and already ratified by two member states, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.

The President, João Lourenço, also suggested the creation of an investment bank for the CPLP to develop the economic potential of the countries that make up the organization.

The country that will succeed Angola as president of the organization in 2023 has yet to be defined.

Zacarias da Costa took over as executive secretary on August 1, succeeding Portugal's Francisco Ribeiro Telles, about two weeks after he was appointed.

Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor are the nine member states of the CPLP, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in July.
