Spokesman for the electoral commission prevented from speaking to journalists about the body's meeting

The spokesman for the National Electoral Commission (CNE) was this Tuesday prevented from giving statements to journalists for allegedly being directed by the president of that body, at the end of a meeting between election commissioners and the Minister of Territorial Administration.

The president of CNE, Manuel Pereira da Silva, and the members of the body's plenary received this afternoon the Minister of Territorial Administration, Marcy Lopes, and his team to address issues related to the Voter Registration Law.

The meeting was initially scheduled for 10:30am, but was rescheduled for 3pm this Tuesday, and in a press release, the CNE's Documentation and Information Center invited journalists to cover the event.

Journalists from different media outlets were present at the headquarters of that body, located on Amilcar Cabral Avenue in downtown Luanda, and waited for about 90 minutes in one of the rooms on the 8th floor of the building of the headquarters of the body.

At the end of the meeting, a CNE communication officer invited the journalists to go to the 11th floor where the spokesman of the electoral body, Lucas Quilundo would summarize to the press the issues discussed at the meeting.

Quilundo introduced himself to the journalists, and as soon as he started speaking, he was interrupted on the instruction of the CNE president that the subject of the meeting "should not be addressed to the press.

The journalists present at the meeting showed indignation at the sudden interruption of the CNE spokesperson's statements, a measure that was justified as a "last minute decision" by a communications officer of that body.

Despite the insistence of the media professionals, the CNE spokesperson left the room, and no information was distributed to the press.

The Voter Registration Law is under discussion in the parliament, where deputies are considering two proposed amendments to the law, namely an initiative of the government and the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).
