João Macedo, director of Novagrolider, passed away

The portuguese businessman João Macedo, partner and administrator of Novagrolider, one of the largest agro-industrial projects in the country, died this Tuesday in Lisbon, victim of a car accident.

The information was released by the Economic and Social Council, an organization created by President João Lourenço, of which João Macedo was a member.

"At this time of pain and mourning, the coordination of the Economic and Social Council (CES), the collective of its advisory members and the executive secretariat, bow down before the memory of this distinguished son of the country, distinguished adviser of the Economic and Social Council, such a great driver of the agro-livestock development in our country and fighter of the Angolan business class," reads a statement.

The ESC, in the same statement, addresses "solidarity to the bereaved family, sentiments of regret to his wife and children, as well as to the group of Angolans who during his lifetime lived with and were inspired by the legacy of the deceased.

The businessman, a driving force of the banana production in the Bengo province, saw his work at the head of Novagrolider recognized again, with the visit of the President, last month, to the farm of this business group that produces 75 thousand tons of banana per year and employs 1100 Angolan workers, exporting to Portugal, Morocco and South Africa.

João Macedo, originally from Alcobaça, settled in Angola accompanied by his brother, José Macedo, and since then has created a group that operates mainly in the agricultural sector, owning two production units, the Bumba Longa Farm (Kwanza Sul) and the Caxito Farm (Bengo).

Altogether, the 4500 hectares of plantation produce an average of 60.000 tons of fruit and vegetables per year, which are destined to supply the Angolan market.

GrupoLider also has two industrial poles for the transformation of agricultural products, one in Catete and another in Caxito, and also has investments in farming and fish farming.

According to José Macedo, the group invested 221 million dollars in the last seven years in four agricultural farms of Novagrolider, in the country.

The amount was invested in agricultural, livestock and fish farming farms, located in Bom Jesus, with 200 hectares, Caxito (500 hectares), Quibala (8500 hectares) and Porto Amboim (10,000 hectares).

In 2017, investments exceeded 50 million dollars, representing a 600 percent increase over 2013.

The volume of exports in 2020 recorded an increase, reaching 7300 tons of various products, especially bananas, mangoes, papaya, pitaia, pineapple, lemon, passion fruit, melon and cantaloupe, reaching a turnover of over a billion kwanzas.
