Covid-19: Africa with 825 more deaths and 38,907 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 825 more covid-19 deaths, bringing the total to 192,643 deaths since the pandemic began, and 38,907 new cases in the last 24 hours, according to the most recent official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) bulletin released this Friday, the cumulative total of cases is 7,659,013, while that of recovered cases is 6,776,443, up 37,429 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with a cumulative 3,650,175 infected and 100,939 deaths associated with the disease since the start of the pandemic on the continent.

In this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, already has 2,734,973 people infected and 80,826 deaths from the disease.

North Africa, with 2,304,903 cases and 61,843 deaths, is the second most affected region on the continent, with a total of 55 countries.

East Africa records a total of 895,286 infections and 18,612 deaths, and the West African region counts 591,368 cases and 8049 deaths.

Central Africa remains the region of the continent with the fewest cases and deaths: 217,281 infected and 3200 deaths.

After South Africa, the most affected country is Tunisia, with 22,932 deaths and 651,035 infected, followed by Egypt, with 16,701 deaths and 287,159 cases.

It is followed by Morocco, with 12,176 deaths and 836,494 cases of infection, and Algeria, with 5121 deaths and 193,674 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique remains the most affected by covid-19, with 1825 deaths and 144,468 cases, followed by Angola, with 1182 deaths and a total of 46,723 people infected.

Cape Verde registers 307 deaths associated with the disease and 34,992 positive cases, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 9173 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers a total of 115 deaths and 5676 infected. São Tomé and Príncipe, meanwhile, has remained at 37 deaths for some time and has recorded 2570 infections in the accumulated total since the start of the pandemic.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,461,431 deaths worldwide, among more than 213.79 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
