Covid-19: Africa with 653 more deaths and 28,600 new cases in 24 hours

Africa has recorded 653 more deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a cumulative 189,307 deaths, and 28,600 new cases of covid-19, for a total of 7,548,993, according to official data.

According to the African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (Africa CDC) bulletin released Monday, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,591,242 people infected and 99,098 deaths associated with covid-19 since the start of the pandemic on the continent.

Within this region, South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent, has 2,690,973 infected and 79,421 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected region by covid-19, reaching 2,258,459 cases and 60,793 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa accounts for 901,626 infections and 18,356 deaths, and the West African region records 583,424 infections and 7885 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest infections and deaths: 214,242 cases and 3175 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 22,537 deaths, but has fewer cases than Morocco, with 810,949 and 11,792 covid-19 deaths.

Egypt is also on the list of those most affected by the pandemic with 286,352 and 16,671 deaths caused by the disease.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique continues to be the worst hit by covid-19, registering 1800 deaths and 142,784 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic and Angola succeeds it on the list with 1140 deaths and 45,817 cases in total.

Cape Verde has 304 deaths associated with the disease and 34,738 infections, Equatorial Guinea has 123 deaths and 9049 cases, Guinea-Bissau exceeded 100 deaths this Sunday, with 103 deaths recorded in total and reached 5518 infected. Sao Tome and Principe, meanwhile, has 37 deaths and 2517 infections.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,423,173 deaths worldwide, among more than 211.3 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent tally by Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
