Independent University of Angola for sale after dismissal of workers

The Independent University of Angola (UNIA) is for sale after its workers have been laid off, announced the owner of the institution, António Burity da Silva in a statement.

:

"As sole owner of the Independent University of Angola, I decide the future of my life project and decided to put this heritage up for sale, because at my age I don't feel able to live the current ups and downs that Angolan businessmen have been forced to live through on a daily basis," the former Minister of Education stresses.

António Burity da Silva also states that this is not bankruptcy, contrary to what was mentioned in the social networks.

"It happens that, like the other Angolan educational institutions, the workers of UNIA were dismissed from their activities since the school year was interrupted for reasons known by all", he explains.

The owner of UNIA also denies having a case opened by the Attorney General's Office of the Republic of Angola for the seizure of the university by the Angolan state.

"I must publicly inform that I have never been contacted by any Angolan judicial body about this or any other matter of judicial forum," said António Burity da Silva.

The government has suspended the collection of tuition fees at all public, public-private and private educational institutions, as long as there are no in-person classes due to covid-19.

Reacting to the decision, the National Association of Private Education (ANEP) considered that the State decreed "the end of private institutions" with the prohibition of payment of fees.

In question could be about 27 thousand workers. Universities such as Católica and Lusíada have announced the suspension of contracts with all their employees, teachers and administrative staff.
