The data provided by Bié's head of Public Health and Endemic Control, Isaías Cambissa, indicates 39 more deaths compared to the same period in 2019.

Isaías Cambissa, quoted by Angolan public radio, said there was also an increase of 650 cases compared to the same period last year.

The deaths were recorded in the province's therapeutic nutrition centres, which also reported an improvement of more than 1500 children, 139 abandonments of treatment and the transfer of 26 patients to other reference health units.

According to Isaías Cambissa, the increase in cases is due to the high levels of poverty in families, especially those in rural areas.

Malnutrition also caused the death of 148 children in Huambo this year, in a total of 1375 cases registered in the first semester, according to data from the health authorities of that region.
