Police imposed more than 5700 fines for not wearing a mask

The police imposed more than 5700 fines for the lack of wearing a mask and detained 4100 people, most for breach of sanitary fences, between 26 May and 8 August, the Interior Ministry spokesman announced.

The country has extended the public calamity situation, with new rules, from 9 August for another period of 30 days.

Since May 26, when the public calamity situation prevailed, 4100 arrests have been made for non-compliance with legal provisions, including 902 detainees for disobedience, 2887 for breaching sanitary fences, seven for attempts to corrupt officials and 304 for contempt or resistance to orders.

According to the ministry's spokesman, Valdemar José, there were also four pedestrians being run over by citizens who wanted to pass police barriers and 17 attacks on police.

In addition, "countless fines" were imposed, he added, after presenting the latest balance sheet of the covid-19 pandemic.

"Unfortunately, there is still a failure to comply with the assumptions," said the police official, recalling that the fines were only applied in the territories under sanitary fences, namely the province of Luanda and the municipality of Cazenga, in Cuanza Norte.

In total, 6890 fines were imposed, of which 5765 for non-use of a mask, 266 for street vending in an unauthorized period, 297 for restaurants and the like for operating outside the established hours, 496 for selling goods outside of hours and 72 for practice individual sport.

The opening of 214 nightlife establishments was also banned and 495 sporting and training activities, 136 religious activities and dispersed 127 funeral ceremonies were prevented.

6584 vehicles and motor vehicles were also apprehended: 1807 taxis (collective transport) seized due to overcrowding and 4697 for the exercise of motorcycle taxi activity.

More than 1000 street vending and handicraft markets were closed due to the lack of biosecurity conditions, with 1208 border violations still being detected, of which 1115 were due to migration actions, and 21 quarantine centers were protected.
