The Heads of State and Government of Southern Africa approved the document, during their 40th Ordinary Summit, held this Monday by videoconference, from Maputo, refers to the final communiqué of the meeting.

The instrument points out the strategy that will enable Southern Africa to achieve industrial development, market integration, infrastructure development, social and economic.

Vision 2050" recognizes the cross-cutting components of gender, youth, environment and climate change and disaster risk management.

The Heads of State and Government noted the importance of peace, security and democratic governance as foundations for achieving economic and social development in southern Africa, the communiqué puts forward.

The summit also approved the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (2020-2030) for the operationalization of "Vision 2050".

In his closing speech, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi reiterated SADC's objective of creating a free trade area, customs union and common market, as pillars for the socio-economic development of southern African countries.

"Our development agenda is inseparable from the strategic objectives of deeper economic integration that consists in the formation of a regional bloc that manifests itself in an effective free trade area", stressed Filipe Nyusi.

Agriculture, he continued, must be at the heart of the opportunities created by regional integration, since the sector absorbs an important part of the populations of southern Africa and is essential for fighting poverty.

In this sense, "isolated economic enclaves should be avoided, in favour of a more interdependent, more cohesive, less asymmetrical region and more aligned with the development objectives of each Member State", stressed the Mozambican Head of State.

During the summit, Mozambique assumed the rotating presidency of SADC, for the next 12 months succeeding Tanzania.

The meeting was held under the slogan "40 Years Building Peace and Security, Promoting Development and Resilience to Global Challenges".

SADC is an organisation made up of 16 member states and was established in 1980 as the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) and later, in August 1992, transformed into the Southern African Development Community.

South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Essuatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are the SADC member states.
