This Monday, the continent counted 23,253 deaths (over 350 deaths in the last 24 hours) caused by the new coronavirus, in a universe of 1,047,218 infected (over 12,287), with the number of people declared as recovered from the disease rising to 720,775 ( plus 12,600), according to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), which brings together the latest data from official reports from the organization's 55 member countries.
The largest number of cases and deaths of covid-19 continue to be registered in Southern Africa, with 589,066 infected and 11,087 fatalities.
In this region, South Africa, the continent's most affected country, counts 559,858 infected and 10,408 killed.
Northern Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, now has 176,809 infected and 7119 killed and in West Africa the number of cases has risen to 140,601 and that of fatalities to 2087.
In the East Africa region, there are 90,423 cases and 1999 deaths and in Central Africa 50,319 cases of infection and 961 deaths are recorded.
Egypt is the second country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, accounting for 95,492 infected and 5009 deaths, following Algeria, which has 34,658 cases and 1289 fatalities.
Among the five most affected countries are Nigeria, with 46,577 infected and 945 deaths, and Sudan, with 11,956 cases and 773 fatalities.
Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of cases (with 2835 cases and 32 deaths), followed by Guinea-Bissau (2050 cases and 29 dead), Mozambique (2269 cases and 16 dead), Angola (1672 infected) and 75 dead) and São Tomé and Príncipe (878 cases and 15 dead).
Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 4821 infected and 83 deaths, a number that has remained constant for several weeks.
