Covid-19: Africa exceeds one million cases

The African continent has exceeded one million confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to an account by the agency France-Presse.

In a continent with 21,050 confirmed deaths so far, South Africa is the country most affected, with more than half of infections (538,184) and almost half of deaths (9,604 deaths). Among people infected in this country, 387,316 were reported to have recovered.

Egypt, on the other hand, recorded almost 95,000 cases and Nigeria almost 45,000.

Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Equatorial Guinea leads in number of cases and deaths (4821 infected and 83 deaths), followed by Cape Verde (2689 cases and 27 dead), Guinea-Bissau (2032 cases and 27 dead), Mozambique (2120 cases and 15 dead), Angola (1483 infected and 64 dead) and São Tomé and Príncipe (878 cases and 15 dead).

Africa is the continent with the second lowest number of confirmed cases, after Oceania.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 708,000 deaths and infected more than 18.8 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
