Reading of the “500 million” case ruling scheduled for Friday in Luanda

The judgment of the “500 million” case, in which the ex-president of the Sovereign Fund of Angola José Filomeno dos Santos and the former governor of the National Bank of Angola Valter Filipe, will be heard on Friday, announced the Supreme Court.

Prior to the reading of the judgment in Luanda, answers to the more than 100 questions presented in the last session of the trial - related to an alleged illegal transfer of 500 million dollars - which took place on 9 July, must be answered.

On the occasion, the judge presiding over the trial, João Pitra, explained that there were several proposals for alteration and addition of other items, built on the basis of the accusation, pronunciation, personal issues of the representatives of the defense and the hearing of discussion and production of evidence, that the court will analyze and then decide and formulate the judgment.

The trial, which started on December 9, 2019, has as defendants the former governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA) Valter Filipe and António Bule Manuel, administrator of this bank, both accused of crimes of embezzlement, fraud for fraud and money laundering, for which the prosecutor asked for sentences of not less than 10 years in prison.

José Filomeno dos Santos, former president of the Sovereign Fund of Angola and son of ex-president José Eduardo dos Santos and Jorge Gaudens Pontes Sebastião, Angolan businessman, accused of the crimes of influence trafficking, money laundering and fraud by fraud, are also accused in this process, and the Public Prosecutor's Office asked for imprisonment terms of not less than seven years.

The case dates back to 2017, when Jorge Gaudens Pontes Sebastião presented José Filomeno "Zenu" dos Santos with a financing proposal for the creation of a strategic investment fund worth US $ 30 billion, which he sent to the executive. .

The deal involved as a "precedent condition", according to an executive statement issued in April 2018, which announced the recovery of the 500 million dollars, the 1.5 billion dollars capitalization by Angola, plus a payment of 33 million dollars for setting up financing structures.

Subsequently, two contracts were signed between BNA and Mais Financial Services, a company owned by Jorge Gaudens Pontes Sebastião, a long-time friend of co-defendant José Filomeno dos Santos, to set up the financing operation, having been, in August of 2017, 500 million dollars was transferred to PerfectBit's account, "contracted by the promoters of the operation", for the purpose of custody of the funds to be structured.

In this process, the former head of state testified, in a letter addressed to the court, that he instructed Valter Filipe to conduct the process and transfer these amounts, "all in the public interest".
