Controversy anthem: Big Nelo says he hasn't budgeted ten times over

The contract signed between the State - through the Ministry of Culture - and the company Karga Eventos for the creation, recording and dissemination of the 45th Anniversary of National Independence has generated controversy in recent days. Big Nelo's company was accused of having revised the budget and presented a figure 10 times higher than initially proposed. The businessman has already denied accusations and says he is saddened by the criticism he has been subjected to.

Last Friday, Novo Jornal reported that the initial agreement provided for the allocation of 14.3 million kwanzas to the company of the rapper and businessman Big Nelo for the music to be produced and released. However, the contract signed establishes a budget 10 times higher than what the company had initially presented when it was given the responsibility to create, produce and handle the advertising campaign of the hymn.

Karga Eventos is accused, according to the same newspaper, of having revised the initial budget: instead of the initial 14.3 million kwanzas, approved by a commission set up by the company to evaluate the bids, the final contract signed a total of over 148 million kwanzas.

On the day the Newspaper's piece was published, the entrepreneur, in ZAP Viva's "Live at Home" program, denied the information disclosed about him.

"I am sad because the proposal for the project was never 14 million kwanzas, but 148 million", he said, adding that, among other logistical expenses, the amount provided for work during two months with 20 artists in the studio.

The amount was approved by several commissions, he said, stressing that the news advanced by Novo Jornal was a lie. "What I believe is that there has been a mistake in sending the Ministry of Culture to Finance," he said.

Despite the denial, the contract has been the target of harsh criticism. This is the case of Maruílio Luiele, first vice-president of the parliamentary bench of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), who considers the value attributed to the creation of the anthem an "exaggeration".

"We still have very poorly defined priorities and there is no doubt that these 148 million to elaborate and carry out the 45 year old anthem is an exaggeration", he said, quoted by DW.

The president of the Movement of Angolan Students (MEA), Francisco Teixeira, also shares Maurílio Luiele's opinion.

"This year alone, the state has spent on the construction of a 12 classroom school in the Bom Pastor district of Huambo province, close to 50 million kwanzas. And for the construction of a 14-room school in Kwanza-north province, close to 48 million kwanzas," he said, explaining that once the money allocated for the anthem was done, it was given to "build three schools".

Karga Eventos won the public tender to design the National Independence anthem and its video clip. The anthem has the participation of several national voices, including Filipe Mukenga, Anna Joyce, Yola Araújo, among others.
