According to information from the investigation by EFE, the two footballers died after their car skidded on the Rias Baja motorway, heading towards Benavente, for unknown reasons, at around 00:40 local time.
According to the same sources, the car, a Lamborghini, may have had a tyre burst while overtaking, which caused it to leave the road and catch fire.
The resulting fire, which spread to the surrounding vegetation, was put out by firefighters, with the Civil Guard and emergency medical services only able to confirm the death of the two footballers.
Diogo Jota was a Liverpool player, a club he had represented for five seasons and for which he shone, especially in the second season, still with the German Jürgen Kloop, with 55 games and 21 goals scored.
The forward, who was part of the attacking trio with Mo Salah, and in other seasons also with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, was involved in the team's conquest of an English League, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Super Cup.
In his career, the player, who was trained at Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, also played for FC Porto for a season, on loan from Atlético de Madrid, who then loaned him out to Wolverhampton, where he ended up signing and playing for three seasons.
In the Portuguese national team, the footballer, who had a knack for goals, also ended up being a reference, not always a starter, but with 49 international caps and two Nations League titles under his belt.
The accident in Spain also resulted in the death of André Silva, brother of Diogo Jota, a winger who played for Penafiel in the Second League.
Among the various reactions to the death of the Portuguese footballer, there was that of the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, who lamented the "unexpected and tragic" death of footballer Diogo Jota, in a traffic accident, considering that this Thursday is "a sad day for football and for national and international sport".
"The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured the name of Portugal, and of his brother is unexpected and tragic. I offer my deepest condolences to his family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sport", wrote Luís Montenegro, in a post on the social network X.
