Portugal falls to third place in Angolan imports in the first quarter of the year

Portugal fell to third place, behind Belgium, in Angolan imports in the first quarter of this year, with 281.9 million euros, a year-on-year variation of 10.7 percent, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) of Angola.

Foreign Trade Statistics, in the first quarter of 2024, consulted today by Lusa, indicate that the main import partners, in the period in question, were China with 14.5 percent, Belgium with 10.0 percent, Portugal with 9.6 percent, South Korea 7.1 percent, United States 6.5 percent, in relation to the total value of imports.

In the first quarter of 2023, Portugal was only behind China in Angolan imports.

From January to March this year, Angolan imports totaled 2.7 billion kwanzas, of which 405.2 billion kwanzas went to China, 279.9 billion kwanzas to Belgium and 267.1 billion kwanzas to Portugal.

The data indicates that in the first quarter of this year the country's trade balance had a positive balance of around 4.53 billion kwanzas, as a result of the behavior of the price of oil, the main export product.

The first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period last year, registered an increase in the total value of exports of 68 percent, while, in the same period, imports registered an increase of 34.2 percent.

The main export continents in the period under analysis were Asia with 72.7 percent, Europe with 18.6 percent and North America with 3.0 percent in relation to the total value, while imports were Europe with 41.6 percent, Asia with 41.3 percent and North America with 7.6 percent of the total value.

National exports reached a value of 8.2 billion kwanzas in the first quarter of the current year.

In the period in question, in relation to exports, the main product groups were mineral fuels with 93.8 percent and pearls; precious stones and metals, jewelry with 4.6 percent of the total value.

For imports, INE statistics indicate that the main product groups include machinery and equipment with 24.9 percent, fuels and minerals with 21.6 percent, food products with 11.5 percent, common metals with 9.9 percent. percent and chemicals with 6.6 percent of the total value.

On the African continent, the main export partners were South Africa with 41.6 percent, Togo with 23.1 percent, Democratic Republic of Congo with 13.7 percent, Republic of Congo with 6.7 percent and Namibia with 5.5 percent of the total value of Africa.

As for imports, the main African partners were South Africa with 67.9 percent, Egypt with 5.8 percent, Namibia with 5.2 percent, Morocco with 3.4 percent and Nigeria with 3 percent. .
