UNITA leader “stranges” Samakuva’s statements about possible candidacy for party leadership

The president of UNITA said, this Thursday, that the party “is not in an internal campaign”, finding strange the statements of former leader Isaías Samakuva, who did not rule out a re-candidacy for the presidency of the party founded by Jonas Savimbi.

Asked by Lusa about these statements, Adalberto Costa Júnior stated that UNITA is not carrying out an internal campaign, considering that "this is unusual".

"We are not in the electoral campaign period, this type of pronouncement at this time is strange", said the UNITA leader, during a political action by the United Patriotic Front (FPU), the platform in which the party is integrated.

"We embrace democratic plurality", he added, highlighting that, at the time of congress, and when the electoral campaign period opens, "everyone who is within the statutes, in conditions, can compete".

For Adalberto Costa Júnior, it becomes "clearer every day, with each interview", that is "managing" 2027, the year scheduled for the next general elections in the country, adding that he has not yet spoken to Samakuva since the interview.

The president of UNITA also returned to the presentation of the Savimbi Foundation, last week, at a press conference (where no one from UNITA's management was present), expressing surprise at "so much apparatus".

"It's normal for the Foundation to be requested by their family members, which doesn't seem normal to me, and it doesn't seem normal to the citizen either, it's this whole apparatus", he highlighted, questioning the coverage given by national public television to this act, in contrast to the FPU press conference on Wednesday.

The political leader argued that the "excessive coverage of this type of interventions" by the former party president aims to "divert attention" from the MPLA's deep crisis.

In an interview on Wednesday with Radio Ecclesia, the former president of UNITA and current coordinator of the recently constituted Savimbi Foundation did not leave aside the possibility of re-applying for the leadership of the "Galo Negro" party, which he left in 2019, being replaced by Adalberto Costa Júnior.

Responding to questions about his political future, Samakuva cited the saying "never say I won't drink this water", without ruling out the possibility of running again for the presidency of UNITA.

This Thursday, in an interview with MFM radio, Samakuva said that he was against the creation of the United Patriotic Front because "some principles" were not respected and highlighted that he has no intention of running for office in the next congress, but added that there may be circumstances that lead you to make that decision.
