Opposition prevented by presidential guard from delivering letter to the Supreme Court

Leaders of the United Patriotic Front (FPU), an opposition bloc, complained this Thursday of having been prevented by the presidential guard from handing over their position on the country's current socio-political situation to the Supreme Court.

The situation was reported by the general coordinator of the FPU and president of UNITA (largest opposition party), Adalberto Costa Júnior, who criticized what he called the "violent nature" of the Angolan regime.

"What happened, in fact, on that street of the Presidency (in Cidade Alta, in Luanda) is [that] we were prevented from reaching the Supreme Court, it is important that citizens know that this is the nature of the regime led by João Lourenço [President of the Republic]", Adalberto Costa Júnior told journalists.

For the leader of UNITA, "it is important that the regime reflects the need to reform this violent nature, a nature of non-dialogue, which is not democratic and which does not have the freedom for citizens to circulate normally within their institutions".

Images circulating on social media show a cordon of vehicles assigned to the presidential guard and their respective armed personnel blocking the main access road to the Supreme Court to prevent the mobility of those responsible for the FPU.

The FPU document, presented on Wednesday at a press conference, portrays the degradation of the country, highlighting that the crisis in Angola has made the daily lives of the majority of Angolans "an authentic ordeal", with those responsible for the bloc announcing that they would send it this Thursday to state institutions.

The caravan made up of FPU leaders, namely Adalberto Costa Júnior and deputy coordinators Abel Chivukuvuku, Filomeno Vieira Lopes and Francisco Viana, delivered the first copy of the document to the Protocol of the Presidency of the Republic.

"We submitted the Protocol to the Presidency, through a barred window in the presidency, which is not correct", highlighted Adalberto, highlighting that the caravan was later prevented from going to the headquarters of the Supreme Court.

"Those who were addressing the letter to the Supreme Court were party leaders, the majority of deputies and some members of the Council of the Republic, in a civic stance, but which leads to some unnecessary nervousness (...). This Angola needs dialogue, reform, of hope and not of hunger", he criticized.

The same document was also delivered to the headquarters of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), where the opposition caravan was received by a priest.
